Spot Robot Advanced AI Upgrade for Fully Automated Industrial Inspection

Boston Dynamics quadruped robot Spot has received a major AI-powered upgrade through updates to the companys Orbit software platform, enabling fully automated and more intelligent industrial inspections. The upgrade allows Spot to autonomously patrol facilities, capturing images at designated points of interest and analyzing them using vision-language prompts within the Orbit platform. Spot can now automatically identify a wide range of issues including safety hazards like spills or missing fire extinguishers, equipment wear and tear, gauge readings, and thermal anomalies. The robot is equipped with thermal cameras capable of detecting hot spots in machinery, tanks, and electrical conductors, and integrated acoustic imagers for identifying air leaks, gas leaks, and unusual vibrations. A new Site View feature creates a visual history of facilities using 360-degree imagery, allowing remote monitoring and historical condition review. Boston Dynamics has also partnered with IFS to combine Spots autonomous inspection capabilities with IFS.ai, creating an end-to-end autonomous field operation system for asset-intensive industries. Companies like Cargill are already leveraging Spot with Orbit for visual inspections as part of their Plant of the Future programs. The upgrade represents a shift from reactive to proactive inspection, with continuous, automated data collection enabling predictive maintenance and supporting digital twin initiatives.
