Title
AI-Driven Platform for Complex Factory Tasks at Rivian
Content
Mind Robotics, originally an internal project at Rivian before spinning out as an independent company in late 2022, developed an AI-driven robot platform specifically designed to automate complex manufacturing tasks on Rivian's factory floors that traditional industrial robots cannot handle. The motivation for this platform stems from a fundamental limitation in conventional factory automation: legacy industrial robots are engineered for highly repeatable, structured tasks like welding and painting, but a significant portion of factory work requires judgment, dexterity, and adaptability that fixed automation cannot provide. Rivian's manufacturing environment, which produces electric vehicles with high customization and frequent design changes, presented an especially challenging automation gap. Mind Robotics built a system that captures large volumes of real-world operational data directly from Rivian's active manufacturing lines — including sensor readings, task sequences, and quality control outcomes — and uses that data to train AI models that can perform complex, variable assembly tasks. The platform combines advanced robotics hardware with large language model-based reasoning to allow robots to handle parts with variation, respond to unexpected conditions, and collaborate safely with human workers. Tasks that previously required human operators because they were too complex or unpredictable for robots — such as routing cables with variable positioning, handling soft materials, or adjusting to part-by-part differences — are being automated through this platform. The first commercial deployments of the Mind Robotics platform are at Rivian's production facilities, where the system operates alongside human workers in mixed-autonomy workflows. The long-term goal is to deploy these AI-driven robotic systems across multiple factories and industries beyond automotive manufacturing.
