Atlantic Health cuts legal-document search time 42% with Amazon Bedrock metadata filtering
Content
Atlantic Health, a multi-hospital healthcare system based in Morristown, New Jersey, deployed an Amazon Bedrock–powered legal-document search system that cut the legal team’s document-search time by 42% and reduced compliance risk by reliably differentiating hospital-specific policy documents and regulatory periods. The deployment was built with Vishal Grover (Atlantic Health, Digital Engineering), Karan Pande (AWS, Solution Architect), and Kunal Pitale (Atlantic Health, Lead Platform Engineer), and published on the AWS for Industries blog on 24 June 2026. The legal team supporting Atlantic Health’s multi-hospital system found that conventional keyword search could not reliably distinguish between closely related legal terms tied to different hospitals or time periods, leading to inefficient retrieval and exposure to compliance risk. The new architecture uses Amazon Bedrock Agents and foundation models together with Amazon OpenSearch Service and metadata-filtered retrieval: legal documents are uploaded to Amazon SFTP, ingested into Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases via AWS Lambda, and processed with Amazon Bedrock Data Automation to extract entity-level metadata stored alongside vector embeddings in OpenSearch. Technical architecture: Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate for scalable query processing; Amazon Bedrock Guardrails for safety, privacy and responsible-AI controls over the responses; metadata-filtered retrieval to ensure context-aware responses that distinguish between hospital entities and regulatory periods. The end-to-end workflow covers ingestion, metadata extraction, embedding generation, retrieval-augmented query handling and response generation. Operationally, the deployment translates to a 42% reduction in legal-document search time, a clearer audit trail for which hospital and which regulatory period each cited document belongs to, and reduced exposure to compliance risk for the multi-hospital network. The architecture is positioned as a reference pattern for healthcare legal teams managing complex, multi-entity policy corpora. Atlantic Health, headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey, operates multiple hospital sites across northern New Jersey.
