TPMG AI Scribes Save 15,791 Hours of Documentation Time Across 2.5M Patient Encounters

The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) rolled out ambient augmented intelligence (AI) scribes in late 2023 to address documentation burden in healthcare. One year and more than 2.5 million patient encounters later, the results show significant impact. A follow-up analysis published in NEJM Catalyst found that generative AI scribes saved physicians an estimated 15,791 hours of documentation time, equivalent to 1,794 eight-hour workdays. Beyond time savings, the AI scribes improved patient-physician interactions and enhanced doctor satisfaction. The findings built on TPMG's 10-week pilot study published earlier in 2024 which provided early evidence of the technology's potential. The deployment represents one of the largest real-world implementations of ambient AI scribe technology in US healthcare, involving physicians across The Permanente Medical Group, which is part of Kaiser Permanente's physician network in California. Kristine Lee, MD, analysis co-author and TPMG associate executive director of virtual medicine and technology, stated that they have an opportunity and obligation to take advantage of innovative AI that improves patient care and augments physicians' capabilities while supporting their wellness. The technology was deployed to reduce the hours physicians spend on clinical documentation, allowing them to focus more on direct patient care. The results demonstrate measurable ROI for ambient AI in healthcare settings, with thousands of hours recovered across the organization.
