SpeakX.ai Deploys AI-Native English Learning Platform: 2 Million Monthly Users in India
Content
SpeakX.ai, an India-based AI-native English learning platform, has scaled to over two million monthly learners with more than two lakh paying subscribers and positive operating margins. Roughly 60% of users come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, and the company has over 1 crore downloads on Google Play. The company was recently featured at the India AI Summit 2026. "Most EdTech platforms use AI as a feature layer," says founder Arpit Mittal. "At SpeakX, we built the product around AI from Day one. The AI is not supporting a teacher in the background. It acts as the teacher, the practice partner, and the feedback engine in one system." The distinction of being AI-native rather than AI-enabled sits at the heart of the company's pitch. Learners enter what Mittal describes as a "live conversation" — simulated scenarios like job interviews, workplace discussions, customer calls, or daily social interactions. Pronunciation and usage are corrected while the learner is speaking, not as a delayed report. The motivation was a clear gap in Indian education: 40-minute classroom periods with dozens of students and one teacher cannot produce fluency, which requires repetition, correction, and trial. AI addresses the practice gap by giving each learner unlimited one-on-one speaking time outside class hours. As Mittal explains: "AI is not a substitute for good teaching. It increases the impact of good teaching by removing the limit on practice time." Building speech technology for India required addressing the country's 22 official languages and 1,600+ dialects. "At SpeakX, our speech recognition accuracy for Indian English speakers is about 95 percent," Mittal says. The system was trained on voice samples from across regions and language backgrounds, focusing on clarity rather than neutralizing accents. The platform currently supports 14 Indian languages, allowing learners to begin in their mother tongue before gradually shifting into English. The product runs on entry-level Android phones and works on low-bandwidth networks, priced at Rs 199 per month. SpeakX was born from a 2023 pivot. Its predecessor, Yellow Class, had scaled during the pandemic as an online hobby-learning platform for children, raising a Series A in 2021. When schools reopened, usage and retention fell, and the model stopped making economic sense. The pivot came from observing that a large number of Indians can read and understand English but struggle to speak it with confidence. "The biggest takeaway for me was about speed and honesty in decision making. Markets change faster than plans," Mittal reflects.
