Title
Covering 1,000 People in 6 Months, Saving 7,000 hours per year, Bayer China Reshapes Training System with Generative AI
Content
Bayer China built Dr. Bei, an LLM-based AI training system for pharmaceutical medical representatives, going from concept to launch in 72 days, covering 450 users at launch and scaling to 1,000+ within 6 months — saving an estimated 6,000–7,000 hours of training time per year and lifting 1-on-1 role-play coaching efficiency by over 50%. "To accelerate our business innovation, we choose AWS for its seamless local-to-global integration and responsive support. These capabilities are crucial for us to timely incorporate the latest LLMs and services into our development and deployment pipeline," said Patrick Moeller, CIO Bayer Pharma. The pressure: traditional pharmaceutical training is time-consuming, costly, and lacks customization. Bayer China needed innovation that stayed inside a compliance-grade framework — in life sciences, "safety and compliance" is non-negotiable, and any generative AI deployment must be "confined within a secure and manageable application framework." After evaluating cloud and AI partners, AWS stood out for service breadth, performance on complex AI applications, and responsive local-to-global support. Dr. Bei runs on Claude via Amazon Bedrock and simulates doctors in natural-language voice interactions, offering 14 different visit scenarios. Amazon Lambda provides serverless, elastic scaling from 450 to 1,000 concurrent users; Amazon API Gateway manages traffic during RPM peaks. Compliance is anchored in 143 AWS global compliance certifications, with Amazon Landing Zone handling secure data access. The system completes the Learn–Practice–Evaluation loop for reps. Operational scale: post-launch, Dr. Bei served 450 users within the first wave and expanded to 1,000+ medical representatives in 6 months; reps and trainers collectively saved 6,000–7,000 hours of training time, with 50%+ efficiency gains in 1-on-1 role-play coaching versus traditional coaching. "Bayer China leverages AWS compliance capabilities and generative AI technologies to accelerate its AI first transformation designed to enhance customer interactions and boost efficiency," said Philip Zhao, VP, Head of Digital Lead – Pharma China & Head of Greater China IT, Bayer China. Future direction: following strong adoption in China, the system has started global rollout — deployment is steadily underway in Europe and being actively advanced across other key regions in Asia and beyond. The aim is a standardized, world-class intelligent training system built once and reused everywhere.
