Manipal Hospitals Speeds Up Nurse Handoffs Across 37 Hospitals with Google Cloud Generative AI

Manipal Hospitals, one of India's largest healthcare providers, serving nearly 7 million patients annually across 37 hospitals and operating more than 10,500 beds, partnered with the Google Cloud Consulting team to co-develop a generative AI solution for nurse handoffs. According to Saroja Jaykumar, Chief Nursing Manager and Business Lead, and Naveen Poosarla, Senior AI Consultant at Google Cloud Consulting, the deployment uses Google Cloud's generative AI to streamline the nurse handover process. The process of transferring essential information about a patient's condition and care plan from an outgoing nurse to an incoming one is crucial for ensuring continuity of care and patient safety. With more than 10,500 beds across the hospitals, the sheer volume of data required for a comprehensive handover meant nurses routinely added an extra 90 minutes to their shifts for both creating and receiving these reports. The Manipal-Google Cloud deployment synthesizes patient condition and care plan information from the EHR into structured, accurate handover summaries, improving efficiency, safety, and consistency across the 37-hospital network. The deployment is consistent with Manipal's ongoing technology investment to deliver clinical excellence and patient-centric care at scale, with future directions including expansion to additional clinical workflows and integration with additional Google Cloud AI services.
