South Australia Medical Imaging Deploys Harrison.ai Chest X-ray AI Statewide as a Second Read

South Australia Medical Imaging (SAMI), a statewide public radiology provider, deployed Harrison.ai's Chest X-ray AI across all of its sites in November 2024, according to a Harrison.ai case study. SAMI serves 6 metropolitan and 4 country hospitals in South Australia, performs about 700,000 examinations a year for inpatients, outpatients and emergency patients at no out-of-pocket cost, and has more than 1,200 staff. The deployment made it the first public medical imaging provider in Australia to use AI for chest X-ray reporting across an entire state. Chest X-rays make up about 150,000 of SAMI's examinations each year, around 21.5% of its imaging volume or more than 400 a day, and are important for detecting conditions such as lung cancer, pneumothorax and pneumonia. SAMI chose Harrison.ai Chest X-ray after reviewing the chest X-ray decision-support tools available in Australia. The tool identifies areas of interest on chest images and suggests potential diagnoses, and radiologists review those suggestions before reaching their final conclusions and dictating the report. SAMI uses it as a second read, which is particularly useful for radiology trainees working after hours. "We're all human, and when you're trying to get through a large volume of imaging 24 hours a day, any assistance to improve accuracy is welcome," said Associate Professor Marc Agzarian, SAMI's clinical director. Dr Emily Li, a radiology registrar at Royal Adelaide Hospital, said the tool is good at finding subtle rib fractures that can easily be missed and that she uses it for all studies as a second read and has adjusted reports based on its findings. Dr Jim Buckley, a consultant radiologist at the same hospital, said it helps confirm the initial report as workloads grow.
