Climeworks, the Swiss-headquartered direct air capture company, integrated AI systems across its operational direct air capture plants including Orca and Mammoth in Iceland. The AI deployment focuses on optimising the energy-intensive process of capturing CO2 directly from ambient air. By applying machine learning and AI-driven process controls, Climeworks achieved a 25% reduction in energy consumption and a 40% reduction in operational costs. The AI systems continuously adjust operational parameters based on real-time data, improving the efficiency of the sorbent regeneration process which is the most energy-intensive step in direct air capture. These results demonstrate how AI can significantly improve the economics of carbon removal technology at scale.
