Swissgrid AI Optimizer — Fully Automatic Grid Control Energy Deployment

Swissgrid, Switzerland's national grid operator, has deployed an AI-powered control energy optimization system called Optimizer Autopilot that has transformed how the company manages the balance between electricity generation and consumption across the Swiss grid. The AI system addresses the core challenge of grid operations: maintaining system frequency at 50 Hertz in real-time despite constant deviations between planned and actual power generation and consumption. The Optimizer Autopilot system analyzes vast amounts of operational data including weather forecasts, power generation schedules, consumption patterns, and historical imbalance events to predict when and where grid imbalances will occur before they manifest. When the AI identifies an impending imbalance, it automatically selects and activates the most cost-effective available control energy tenders from the market, completing in seconds what previously required manual analysis by grid control specialists. The introduction of the AI tool was initially met with skepticism from experienced operators who had been managing control energy manually for decades. Between January and May 2025, the joint team brought the solution into productive operation at record-breaking speed for European grid AI deployments. The automated system activated control energy with 23% lower average cost than the manual process it supplemented. Following its successful pilot, Swissgrid is expanding the Optimizer into a modular product family.
