Twin Rivers USD: District-Wide MagicSchool AI for 25,000 Students, Aligned to AB 2876

Twin Rivers Unified School District, serving over 25,000 students in North Sacramento, California, scaled MagicSchool’s AI platform from a small teacher pilot to a full district license after seeing measurable impact during the pilot phase. The deployment was designed around California’s new AI requirements under AB 2876, with every MagicSchool tool mapped to state standards before launch. The case study highlights four outcomes: all MagicSchool tools aligned to California standards and AB 2876, increased teacher collaboration on instructional strategies using AI, hours of weekly time savings reported by teachers, and AI literacy built in for all learners. Two MagicSchool tools stood out in the pilot — Raina, the AI instructional coach that gives real-time, personalized guidance, and the Report Card Comment Generator, which became a key time-saver during grading periods. The pilot-to-scale approach was deliberate: a small group of tech-forward teachers tried the tools, shared their results, and built district-wide demand. The approach was particularly effective given Twin Rivers’ explicit need to comply with AB 2876 — teachers needed to see standards-aligned outputs before they would trust the tools with student work. Operationally, Twin Rivers USD scaled the deployment using a structured rollout playbook combining teacher champions, instructional technology coaching, and curriculum mapping. The deployment covers every school in the district, with usage data shared with the Coordinator of Instructional Technology. AB 2876 compliance was a non-negotiable: every tool the district activated had to map to specific California content standards before any teacher could use it in production. "The moment I realized we needed to make a change was when I noticed how much time teachers were spending after school just to stay afloat," said Kelly Bettencourt, Coordinator of Instructional Technology at Twin Rivers USD. Future direction, per Twin Rivers, includes deeper student-facing AI use, expansion into more subject areas, and continued tracking of hours saved per teacher against student writing outcomes.
