Coursera has built Coursera Coach, a generative AI learning assistant that sits inside courses on its platform, combining AI capabilities with the expertise of its Teaching & Learning and Product teams, the company described in a June 2024 blog post. Launched in 2023, Coach was at that point in beta and available to a subset of learners, with broader access planned for later in 2024.
"Coursera Coach is like having a smart best friend," one learner told Coursera's researchers.
Online learners often lose momentum when they get stuck on a concept, struggle to stay motivated and feel isolated. Coursera wanted a tutor grounded in the science of learning and in the content of its partners' courses rather than a generic chatbot.
Coach follows Mastery Learning principles: frequent assessment, tailored feedback and individual pacing so that learners understand a topic before moving on. The team describes four main uses. Learners can ask Coach to explain a topic step by step with real-world examples without leaving the course. Before a graded assessment, a "Help Me Practice" mode, added after learners asked to be questioned rather than only answer questions, uses Socratic probing questions, adapts to the learner's level and gives targeted feedback. Coach also offers encouragement that learners said reduced the feeling of studying alone, and it is designed to build metacognitive skills such as note-taking and recall. Since launch the team has gathered feedback through community dialogue and targeted learner research and shipped updates every few weeks.
