Title
UNIQA SEE cuts health insurance claims processing times by 90% with Azure AI | Microsoft Customer Stories
Content
Austrian insurance group UNIQA's Southeastern Europe (SEE) division built an end-to-end AI medical referral claims processing solution using Microsoft Azure AI, Microsoft Foundry, Azure Document Intelligence, and Azure OpenAI. The system extracts, validates, and integrates referral letter and invoice data from multiple healthcare providers via APIs into UNIQA's core claims system. The deployment cut health insurance claims processing time from 15-30 minutes to 2-3 minutes per case (an 85-90% reduction), reduced call center volumes, and freed claims handlers for higher-value work. A new self-service web and mobile app lets customers submit medical referral letters digitally without employee interaction. UNIQA SEE became the first insurer in Southeastern Europe to implement an AI-powered business process solution of this kind, going beyond regional voice/chatbot efforts. The company plans to scale the Azure-based solution across additional countries and business units in SEE. Co-built with Microsoft Cloud Solution Architects via hackathons.
