Walmart, the world's largest retailer headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, operating approximately 10,500 stores worldwide with $648 billion in 2024 fiscal year revenue, announced a major deployment of AI-powered tools for its 1.5 million US store associates in June 2025, according to the company's official announcement.
The deployment spans multiple tools integrated into the Walmart associate app. The flagship tool is a real-time translation feature available in 44 languages facilitating multilingual conversations among associates and customers. The translation tool handles both text-to-text and speech-to-speech formats and is enhanced with Walmart-specific knowledge, recognising proprietary brand names like Great Value and keeping them properly referenced across translations. Performance is continuously enhanced through iterative feedback loops.
The second major tool is an AI-driven task management system. Initially available for overnight stocking, the AI tool intelligently understands, prioritises, and recommends tasks for associates. Based on early results, team leads and store managers estimated that the tool reduced the time spent on shift planning from 90 minutes to 30, a 67% reduction.
Walmart also upgraded its existing conversational AI tool used by associates for the past five years for questions like 'What aisle is hand soap located in?' or 'What's my schedule for tomorrow?' The upgrade leverages GenAI to turn lengthy process guides into clear, step-by-step instructions. Walmart's supply chain AI systems are also being rolled out globally into markets including Costa Rica, Mexico, and Canada after proven results in the US.
Greg Cathey, Walmart's senior vice president of Transformation and Innovation, said: "AI is a key enabler in improving how we work, and we believe its full potential is unlocked only when paired with the strengths of our people. When you put intuitive, accessible technology into the hands of millions of associates, the impact isn't incremental — it's transformational."
Looking ahead, Walmart plans to add more languages to the real-time translation tool and launch it internationally, expand the AI task management to additional shifts beyond overnight stocking, and deepen GenAI capabilities across associate workflows.
