McDonald's, the world's largest restaurant company operating more than 40,000 locations serving 68 million customers daily, is executing one of the most ambitious technology overhauls in restaurant industry history centered on AI in the drive-thru, BrightCoding reported in June 2026.
The scale is unprecedented. Drive-thrus account for approximately 70% of McDonald's US sales, and even a 1% improvement in speed or accuracy translates to hundreds of millions of dollars. In December 2023, McDonald's announced a multi-year global partnership with Google Cloud to deploy generative AI, edge computing, and predictive analytics across thousands of restaurants, with a goal of creating the most sophisticated and productive restaurant technology platform in the industry.
McDonald's began its AI journey in 2019 by acquiring Apprente, a Silicon Valley conversational voice AI startup. The company partnered with IBM in 2021 to scale the technology across 100+ US and UK locations in an Automated Order Taking (AOT) pilot. By 2023-2024, leaked reports indicated the IBM system was underperforming at approximately 82-85% accuracy, and McDonald's officially ended the IBM partnership on June 17, 2024, shutting off the technology by July 26, 2024. The company then shifted to a Google Cloud partnership for the next generation of drive-thru AI.
McDonald's global CIO Brian Rice said: "We see tremendous opportunity for growth in our digital business. Connecting our restaurants worldwide to millions of datapoints across our digital ecosystem means tools get sharper, models get smarter, restaurants become easier to operate, and most importantly, the overall experience for our customers and crew gets even better."
The new deployment combines AI voice ordering, dynamic digital menu boards, dedicated mobile pickup lanes, and vehicle identification technology. By 2027, McDonald's plans to operate 50,000 restaurants globally and has committed to "double down" on AI investment. The tech overhaul is being deployed at 27,000 drive-thru locations globally.
Looking ahead, McDonald's plans to scale the Google Cloud AI system to full global deployment by 2027, integrate computer vision for vehicle identification and personalised menu recommendations, and extend edge computing to optimise kitchen operations and predict ingredient demand in real time.
