GAC Aion's Smart Eco-Factory in Guangzhou produces a new vehicle every 53 seconds while building up to 10 models on shared lines and handling more than 100,000 personalized configurations, GAC Group said in a March 2026 article on the plant. The factory, which joined the World Economic Forum's Global Lighthouse Network in 2023 as its only new-energy-vehicle lighthouse, also gained carbon-neutrality certification that year.
High-mix, made-to-order production depends on identifying each personalized order correctly and scheduling it without disrupting the line, and on catching defects early enough that speed does not cost quality.
In the welding workshop, more than 600 industrial robots are integrated with an AI visual inspection system that GAC says responds in milliseconds and inspects to millimeter precision, part of digital quality monitoring across the whole process. Computer vision is used for intelligent defect identification, and a predictive maintenance system monitors equipment status in real time. An intelligent torque management system collects data on thousands of key fastening points in each vehicle for lifetime traceability. On the supply-chain side, multi-objective optimization algorithms and big data drive dynamic production scheduling, which GAC says has increased scheduling efficiency by 60% and reduced inventory costs.
The plant pairs this with on-site energy management: a distributed photovoltaic system generating more than 20 million kWh a year covers about half of daily electricity demand, and a vehicle-to-grid microgrid lets parked electric vehicles take part in grid peak regulation.
