Hyundai Motor Group HMGICS Singapore AI + 200 Robots Cut Lead Times 50%
Content
Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS), launched in 2023, deployed more than 200 robots across inspection, production systems, factory spaces, and human workflows, with AI embedded to support production optimization, quality management, and data-driven operations, and the company has since reported that lead times and operational bottlenecks have been reduced by more than 50 percent, with logistics automation of about 68 percent and manufacturing automation of about 67 percent — figures Hyundai described as "significantly higher" than those of conventional manufacturing facilities. According to Hyundai, "HMGICS is at the forefront of pioneering the future of smart manufacturing in Singapore and beyond, while advancing vehicle production," and "these gains translate into enhanced productivity, improved operational stability, and greater responsiveness to production changes." The fleet includes automated guided vehicles and autonomous mobile robots, with one of the most prominent deployments being Spot, a four-legged mobile robot from Boston Dynamics that conducts AI-enabled inspections and event-driven quality solutions including automated defect detection across equipment, all monitored from a digital command center where human supervisors make higher-value decisions. Hyundai framed the design intent as supporting, not replacing, human workers by taking on "repetitive, demanding, or potentially hazardous tasks," with AI also reducing unnecessary movement, energy consumption, and material waste by ensuring materials are delivered efficiently across the facility. Beyond the production lines, HMGICS runs an immersive brand-experience layer that includes food and beverage concepts, virtual reality applications, and a two-storey sustainable farm that uses advanced robotics and hydroponics to sustain up to 600 heads of vegetables daily. Technologies and system designs developed at HMGICS have already been deployed across Hyundai's global manufacturing sites, including in the US, and are designed for continuous upgrades and scalable adoption worldwide as Singapore positions itself as a hub for advanced manufacturing in Southeast Asia.
