Microsoft and NVIDIA are partnering to bring AI across the full lifecycle of nuclear energy — from site permitting and design to construction and operations — anchored by a flagship result in which Aalo Atomics cut its permitting time by 92% using Microsoft's Generative AI for Permitting solution, saving an estimated $80 million a year. The nuclear industry is racing to meet a historic surge in power demand but remains trapped in a delivery bottleneck: permitting alone can take years, cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and require engineers to spend thousands of hours reconciling tens of thousands of pages of documentation. The Microsoft + NVIDIA collaboration aims to move the industry from manual engineering toward reference-based delivery while preserving regulatory accountability, by unifying data, simulation, and evidence across each project phase. The work is structured around four lifecycle stages. In design and engineering, digital twins and high-fidelity simulations let engineers reuse proven patterns and see how a small design change ripples through the validated model. In licensing and permitting, generative AI handles document drafting, gap analysis, and consistency checks so regulators can focus on safety judgments rather than reconciling pages. In construction and delivery, 4D (time) and 5D (cost) simulations virtually construct the plant before shovels hit the dirt, with AI tracking physical progress against the digital plan in real time. In operations and maintenance, AI-powered sensors and operational digital twins detect anomalies early, supporting predictive maintenance that keeps the grid stable with human operators in control. The technology stack combines NVIDIA Omniverse, NVIDIA Earth 2, NVIDIA CUDA-X, NVIDIA AI Enterprise, PhysicsNeMo, Isaac Sim, and Metropolis with Microsoft's Generative AI for Permitting Solution Accelerator, Microsoft Copilot, and Microsoft Planetary Computer — all on Azure. Beyond Aalo, Southern Nuclear has deployed Copilot-based agents across its engineering and licensing fleet to reuse institutional knowledge; Idaho National Laboratory is automating complex engineering and safety-analysis report assembly and creating standard methodologies for regulators; Everstar (an NVIDIA Inception startup) brings domain-specific nuclear AI to Azure, while Atomic Canyon's Neutron platform is now available in the Microsoft Marketplace.
