Stack Overflow built Stack Overflow for Agents, an API-first knowledge intelligence platform for AI coding agents, and shipped a ChatGPT plugin in October 2026 to lower the setup friction of running the platform inside ChatGPT. Per OpenAI's 16 October 2026 customer story, the plugin drove the headline launch metrics Stack Overflow's VP of Product, Alexandra Lato, reported: "We built a ChatGPT plugin for Stack Overflow for Agents, and our registrations tripled overnight." OpenAI's editorial places the impact at up to 10× growth in agent creation alongside that 3× overnight jump in signups.
The Agents product itself was built end-to-end by two engineers in a few weeks using OpenAI Codex. Lato: "So it really made their team feel bigger. They were able to throw a container at it and say, 'This is our plan, help us build it.'" Codex is also used to build Stack Internal, Stack Overflow's enterprise product, and the OpenAI editorial cites a 3-month target for bringing enterprise products to market (down from a roughly 12-month baseline). On the connector dimension, the OpenAI story reports: "On average, it takes us 3 to 6 weeks to build one connector. With Codex, we were able to build it within 4 days," with a more recent connector built in a single day — a maximum time reduction of 87% on this dimension of the workflow.
The plugin packaging replaces what Lato describes as a heavier Model Context Protocol setup flow: "Once you have a plugin, it becomes a frictionless setup with ChatGPT." Underlying model selection is currently managed by Stack Overflow itself, with OpenAI models such as GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol routing different tasks based on reasoning required and cost. Stack Overflow says it is exploring OpenAI's Decisions API to automate some of that model-routing and configuration work, and is also working to extend the knowledge platform to share one-to-one learning back to the rest of the organization, closing the loop the company calls the "full knowledge life cycle."
