The new system combines track-side AI cameras with remote-controlled drones to detect damage faster than manual inspection. Cameras installed near Shimbashi, Ebisu, Mejiro, and Uguisudani stations monitor train pantographs in real time; the AI analyzes the footage, detects damage automatically, and sends alerts to the control room when defects are identified. For broader infrastructure assessment, drones take off from designated points along the line to inspect overhead wires and other equipment, transmitting live video to technical teams so they can evaluate damage extent before arriving on site. The system is designed to shorten the time required to resume service after technical incidents by approximately 30%. In a scenario where repairs previously took about seven hours, the new combination of AI and drones is expected to shorten the response time by roughly two hours. The AI handles the real-time damage detection across the high-traffic Yamanote loop, while the drones extend inspection reach across adjacent infrastructure once an incident is flagged. Trials of the AI camera system begin in April 2026, with full operational deployment on the Yamanote Line scheduled for fiscal year 2026. JR East is also considering extending the system to the Tokyo–Shinjuku section of the Chuo Line and to Shinkansen services, where similar pantograph and overhead wire monitoring could prevent future large-scale disruptions.
