Apollo Agriculture, an agri-fintech operating in Kenya and Zambia, leverages AI to assess the creditworthiness of smallholder farmers who lack collateral or formal credit histories. The company provides a comprehensive package of services including credit, high-quality inputs, agricultural advice, and crop insurance. Its AI-driven credit assessment engine evaluates farmers using data collected by field officers via mobile app (farm size, crop types, household information, farming behaviours), satellite imagery, and credit bureau records. The final credit decisioning is entirely automated through Apollo's AI models, which were developed over several years using a 'lend-to-learn' approach to generate repayment data. Apollo also uses machine learning to detect fraud, analysing behavioural patterns of field officers and payment histories of loan applicants. Key benefits include scalable uniform lending criteria reducing operational costs, risk-based interest rate pricing, and instant loan eligibility feedback — cutting approval times from 2–3 days to real-time while the field officer is still with the farmer. Since its 2016 launch, Apollo has assisted nearly 400,000 farmers (about half women) achieving yields 2–2.5 times Kenya's national average. Apollo is also exploring generative AI to deliver real-time personalised agronomic advice via an AI companion in the field officer app.
