Moia, which runs Europe's largest ride-pooling service in Hamburg and has carried more than 10 million passengers, is using emotion3D's AI software to take over interior safety checks that a driver would normally perform on its self-driving Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD shuttles, ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle International reported in July 2024.
"emotion3D's technology allows us to decouple the driver from the vehicle without compromising on safety or customer experience," said Ralf Sigmund, chief technology officer at Moia.
Without a driver, someone or something has to confirm that the vehicle is safe to move off: doors clear, nothing blocking the cabin floor, passengers within the permitted number and wearing seatbelts. Automating these checks also lets fleet operators reduce the ratio of dispatchers to vehicles in the control center.
Interior cameras feed emotion3D's Cabin Eye software stack, which analyzes the images and sends the results to Moia's own software. Within a few seconds the system checks whether doors are clear, whether objects are blocking the floor, the lighting conditions, passenger numbers and seatbelt use, and then either signals the vehicle to drive or hands over to the fleet control center. In some cases control-center staff can clear the vehicle remotely and speak to passengers over an audio link. Data is collected under GDPR and privacy-by-design principles. "Through situational interior monitoring, we help automate secondary driver tasks," said emotion3D CEO Florian Seitner.
The interior analysis and the customer experience of the automated processes were to be tested over the following months with safety drivers on board to monitor the system.
