Cognition announced the Devin Open Source Initiative in December 2024, offering selected open source maintainers 500 free ACUs on a Devin Teams plan. Devin is the world first fully autonomous AI software engineer, capable of planning, executing, and validating multi-step software tasks across production repositories. Open source projects often have long backlogs of minor issues that overwhelm maintainers, and Devin is designed to handle these background tasks so maintainers can focus on critical work. As evidence of its capabilities, Devin has already contributed to major open source projects including Anthropic MCP (Model Context Protocol inspector), Dagger, karpathy/nanoGPT, llama_index, hyperliquid-rust-sdk, ekzhang/bore, zod, and google/go-github. For each contribution, Devin works autonomously: researching the codebase, writing code, running tests in the browser, and submitting pull requests. Devin integrates with GitHub pull request comments and CI checks, automatically incorporating maintainer feedback through webhooks. The initiative provides open source maintainers with free access to Devin AI agents to handle low-priority tasks and feature requests, significantly accelerating the pace of open source development without adding burden to human contributors.
