Northern Powergrid, the UK electricity distribution network operator serving 8 million customers, deployed its Boston Spa Energy Efficiency Trial (BEET) combining a smart-meter algorithm with GE Vernova's Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), achieving average bill savings of £20 and carbon footprint reductions of 27 kg per household annually — equivalent to driving 100 km — across the initial 15,000-home trial area. "BEET represents a revolutionary application of a well-understood technique that could help to deliver huge capacity savings on parts of our network, while saving our customers energy and money," said Iain Miller, Head of Innovation at Northern Powergrid. Boston Spa resident Keith Jackson added, "It will bring carbon dioxide savings and potentially help to release network capacity ready for the growth in electric vehicles – a win, win, win for customers, the planet, and the company [Northern Powergrid]." The context was that to ensure compliance with voltage regulations, households often receive a higher voltage than most domestic appliances require, wasting energy. Voltage optimization normally requires investment in voltage adjustment devices out of reach for many consumers, prompting Northern Powergrid to develop a software-only solution using smart-meter data. Technically, the BEET-Box applies an algorithm to local smart meter data every 30 minutes to determine the most efficient voltage to supply on the network at a given moment, with GE Vernova's ADMS delivering real-time network voltage data from smart meters to enable active management and monitoring of the low-voltage network. At scale, the trial started in early 2023. Upon successful trials, Northern Powergrid plans to roll out its BEET-Box technology across its region, with 80% of its 3.9 million homes and businesses benefitting by 2033. Nationwide, voltage optimization could save up to £500M from consumer energy bills and cut between 200,000 and two million tons of carbon dioxide annually — equivalent to removing up to 200,000 cars from the road. "Innovations such as this are a key enabler of our plans to support net zero," Iain Miller concluded.
