Vimeo and Brightcove Acquisitions - Unified Video AI Platform
Content
Italian mobile application developer Bending Spoons S.p.A. acquired YouTube rival Vimeo in a 1.38 billion dollar all-cash deal. Founded in 2004, Vimeo is a U.S. video hosting and sharing platform popular for its creator focus and high-definition playback options with a lack of ads. Content creators can use various tools including artificial intelligence features to produce and share videos. Vimeo was spun off from InterActive Corp. in 2021 to become independent and publicly-traded, but has struggled since then losing almost 90% of its market value. Bending Spoons, which owns popular applications including Evernote, MeetUp and WeTransfer, plans to make ambitious investments in Vimeos creator-focused and enterprise offerings as well as responsible AI-enabled features. Vimeo currently makes money through a subscription-based model where content creators and businesses can access premium video creation tools including sophisticated AI offerings. Brightcove was also acquired by Bending Spoons in 2024 for 233 million dollars. Vimeo uses AI for script generation and text-based video editing tools.
