Per Atlassian's Developer AI team: "We had a PR problem at Atlassian. Our median time from PR to merge had crept up to over 3 days, with engineers waiting an average of 18 hours just to get that first review comment. That's 18 hours of context-switching or sitting idle, neither of which we can afford at the scale of Atlassian." Atlassian's PR backlog was growing because code generation had accelerated but senior-engineer review capacity stayed fixed. Three challenges drove the build: (1) overall code quality — back-and-forth on typos, consistency, and style; (2) engineers forgetting engineering standards (security, compliance, accessibility) at scale; (3) PRs that technically worked but didn't meet the feature's acceptance criteria. Standards, Atlassian noted, "are often harder to find (and document and keep updated!) than they are to follow" — a clear opportunity for AI. Rovo Dev was built and adopted internally in early 2025. In parallel, Rovo Dev entered customer beta, where it cut customer PR cycle time by 32% on average (from 4.18 days to 2.85 days — more than a day) and is now generally available. Rovo Dev is Atlassian's developer agent with context of the entire Atlassian platform, available in Bitbucket, GitHub, IDEs, and the CLI, built on cutting-edge LLMs. Three accelerators: (1) instant code-quality feedback — automatic review of any PR commit for typos, logic errors, anti-patterns, and potential bugs, with one-click-accept code suggestions; (2) engineering-standards enforcement — pulls customized standards from Confluence documents (per repo, project, or company-wide) and checks PRs against lint rules, design patterns, security/compliance policies, and API contracts; (3) acceptance-criteria check — connects PRs to Jira work items and notifies the PR author of unmet criteria. Per Atlassian, the team plans to "iterate and improve Rovo Dev in the coming months, with more customized support for enforcing complex standards, improved review quality, and adding Rovo Dev's automated quality checks to more stages of the development lifecycle, such as CI/CD."
