Google is integrating Gemini AI capabilities into Google Translate for improved text and live speech translation. Starting in the US and India, Google Translate now uses advanced Gemini capabilities to better handle nuanced translations including idioms, local expressions, and slang. For example, English idioms like stealing my thunder now get natural accurate translations that capture the real meaning rather than literal word-for-word translations. The update covers translation between English and nearly 20 languages including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German. A new beta feature brings real-time speech-to-speech translation directly to headphones using Gemini native speech-to-speech translation capabilities. The Translate app also adds new languages for practice and skill building with learning tools. Gemini enables true contextual understanding that goes beyond word-for-word translation to capture the meaning and nuance of how something is said.
