Visa Prepares Payment Infrastructure for AI Agent Transactions
Content
Visa has extended its global payment network to support AI agent-initiated transactions through its Card-Based Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) specification, developed in partnership with Stripe and Tempo. As autonomous AI agents become capable of executing tasks, coordinating services, consuming APIs, purchasing compute resources, and completing automated B2B workflows including micropayments for API calls and cloud resources from the command line, Visa is building the infrastructure to support Command Line Commerce at scale. Visa released a comprehensive technical specification defining how tokenized card credentials are passed, authenticated and processed within MPP-compatible workflows, along with a Software Development Kit (SDK) that implements the spec and gives developers a clear path to building card-based transactions for machine payments. The specification is processor-agnostic and openly available, allowing merchants, payment service providers and acquirers to participate in these payment flows. Built on top of Visa Intelligent Commerce and the Trusted Agent Protocol, the infrastructure provides tokenization, authentication, and agent identity verification to make card-based machine payments secure and trustworthy. The MPP flow allows an agent to request a resource, receive a payment requirement from the merchant or service, authorize payment as part of the same interaction, and receive delivery without any browser or checkout redirect. Visa is participating as a design partner to bring trust and resilience into new forms of AI agent commerce.
